Seniors Earn Scholarships from EPEA

The Erie 1 Professional Educators Association recently awarded the Marie Szabla Memorial Scholarship to two deserving seniors. Each student received $1000 toward their continuing education.

Amaya Walker is a senior at Cleveland Hill High school. She will be attending UNC: Pembroke starting this August. The scholarship committee was blown away by Amaya’s application. She excelled in grades however that was just a portion of her accomplishments. Amaya worked as a junior camp counselor and immediately built rapport with both her supervisors and the children. She showed maturity beyond her years helping children work through behavioral difficulties. Amaya also showed that she possesses the ability to empower others while working with campers in the adaptive needs program. Amaya’s drive to help others and lead does not stop there. Amaya was captain of her cheerleading team, member of the national honor society, a freshmen mentor and volunteered as a Big Sister. As if this was not enough Amaya also volunteered for two years at Children’s Hospital and ECMC. Amaya will be majoring in Neonatal Nursing at UNC: Pembroke. It is our great honor and pleasure to award Amaya with The Marie Szabla Memorial Scholarship. We wish you the best of luck going forward and are confident that you will thrive in all your future endeavors.

Phillip Caccarelli is a senior at Frontier High School. Phillip is currently undecided on which university he will be attending however he was accepted to Daemen, UB and Geneseo. Phillip is graduating with a 99.57 average and 3rd in his class of 321. His academic and extracurricular accomplishments helped set him apart from a very competitive application field. Phillip excels as a member of the Wind Ensemble, student government vice president and team captain of both the baseball and soccer team. Phillip also volunteers his time organizing charity events, working at the Holy Angels Food Pantry and UNYTS blood drives. Phillip plans on becoming a math teacher because he wants “to be a positive influence on the next generation”. It is our great honor and pleasure to award Phillip with The Marie Szabla Memorial Scholarship. We wish you the best of luck with your studies and goals moving forward.
